Ayurveda Counseling

Maybe you can relate…

I used to feel so completely overwhelmed and like such a failure when I couldn’t wake up early and do every single health promoting practice I have ever learned. And there were a lot! I started to notice that I had far greater success when I did less, and focused on the strategies that worked for me, my lifestyle, and my budget.

When I kept things simple, affordable, and doable I noticed a big improvement: I felt more content, I felt good in my mind and body and I could say “Yes, I love my life” even when circumstances became challenging.

This is where Ayurveda became my focus.

What is Ayurveda?

The word Ayurveda -pronounced eye-your-vay-duh- is Sanskrit for the science of life. It was developed in the region now known as India about 5000 years ago to help prevent and treat disease. It is often called the sister science to Yoga.

Ayurveda says the world is made up of 5 elements- ether or space, air, fire, water, earth. Each of these elements have particular qualities and these qualities give us clues about how to maintain and manage our health.

The 20 qualities tend to group together in what we know as Doshas. Dosha strangely enough means something along the lines of “that which causes problems” or basically these groupings of elements will really mess you up when they get out of balance. Those 3 doshas are Vata (ether and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water).

You can learn more about the doshas here: Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

Ayurveda becomes a way of living with nature. We look to nature to help us determine how to respond to stimuli that might cause us to be unbalanced and unwell. We change our eating and energy management protocols with the seasons and in relation to current life situations. Ayurveda teaches us to become self-aware and more in tune with our environment and our response to it.

Ayurveda focuses on small changes in habits, diet, and mindset that make big changes in the long run.

I think everyone should be able to experience a life they feel good about, and this is why I am so excited to share this system of living with as many people as I can.

And all you need is a desire to make small changes in your eating, movement, and sleep and a few tweaks in your mindset.

Why Ayurveda?

Ayurveda means “the science of life” in Sanskrit. It is a healing practice from ancient India that focuses on preventing disease and maintaining health through creating balanced eating habits, daily and seasonal routines that are based on an individual’s constitution, needs and imbalances.

Here are some reasons to try Ayurveda:

  • You feel tired long before it’s time for bed.

  • You eat well but still don’t feel great or continue to gain weight.

  • You are experiencing aches and pains that weren’t there a few years ago.

  • You are watching your parents age and wondering how to avoid the same health challenges.

  • You are navigating a big life change like – changing jobs, entering menopause, an empty nest, or a health scare

If you can relate to any of these, and you like to keep things simple, then you’re in the right place.

What to expect.

Building new habits and creating better health takes time, so I offer an initial session and a follow up session as a package. During the initial session we will review your health form and

  • discover what you need to lead a simple and satisfying life that resolves health challenges.

  • uncover which patterns support you and which ones get in the way of making progress in your health and what you need to do to move beyond those obstacles.

  • and outline a simple personalized action plan to create small that will create big changes that don’t leave you feeling deprived or overwhelmed.

In the follow up session at least a month later we will…

·       Review successes and challenges

·       Change or tweak current recommendations

·       Add new steps to continue building your new routine

Since we are effected by the seasons I recommend having a follow up each season for the first year. After this time you should be well on your way to managing your health on your own.
